  • Supporting self-directed learning and development

Situations where coaching is a suitable development tool include:

  • Helping competent technical experts develop better interpersonal skills, such as handling conflict.

  • Supporting an individual’s potential and providing career support.

  • Developing a more strategic perspective after a promotion to a senior role.

  • Dealing with the impact of change on an individual's role

Impartiality and confidentiality.

Line managers are often expected to operate internally in a peer coaching capacity in the workplace. Typically, organisations apply coaching as a day-to-day management activity, embedded into one-to-one meetings and performance conversations. The issue that is often raised is how effectively managers can coach their own staff, given the line manager/employee dynamic and the need for impartiality in the coaching relationship.

The role of a workplace coach involves:

Goal-setting/Action planning:
Identifying outcomes during the coaching process, outlining steps and strategies to achieve goals.

Assessment:
Evaluating strengths and areas for development

Feedback:
Providing constructive feedback, encouragement, and support.

Skill development:
Assisting in honing specific skills or competencies.

Performance improvement:
Helping to overcome challenges and obstacles that may be hindering productivity and performance.

Encouraging open communication:
Creating an open, confidential and safe space, fostering a supportive environment to seek help and support when needed.

Promoting wellbeing:
Providing resources to manage stress, time management and setting boundaries.

"I have worked with Jayne over many years, predominantly within a workplace environment where she has provided support and coaching to help my teams and I develop professionally. By working on confidence and communication skills she has helped us improve wellbeing and performance. By making some gentle and constructive changes we were able to work more to our strengths making for a happier workplace environment. She is personal, understanding and objective in her coaching allowing you to relax and fully understand the process.

More recently having undertaken a significant career move, Jayne provided invaluable 1 to 1 coaching to help me understand the process and to achieve the best results. She gave me several tips which were very easy to implement yet helped move me closer to understanding my professional objectives and long-term goals.
